What is Deep Learning ?
Deep Learning is a field within Machine Learning that uses multi-layer neural networks to learn patterns from large and complex datasets. In simple terms, traditional Machine Learning models may require more human involvement to determine which features are important. Deep Learning models, however, can automatically learn many complex features when provided with suitable data and sufficient computing power. For example, when building a system that distinguishes between images of cats and dogs, a traditional approach may require certain image features to be identified manually. A Deep Learning model can instead learn from a large number of images and automatically identify edges, shapes, textures, and more complex visual features across different layers. For this reason, Deep Learning is one of the core technologies behind areas such as image recognition, Natural Language Processing, speech recognition, Generative AI, and Large Language Models.
How Does Deep Learning Work?
The foundation of Deep Learning is Artificial Neural Networks. A neural network consists of interconnected artificial neurons that process information through several stages.
In simplified form, a neural network has three main parts:
Input Layer — the layer where the initial data enters the model.
Hidden Layers — internal layers where the data is processed and different features are learned.
Output Layer — the layer where the model produces its final result.
The word “deep” in Deep Learning refers to the network having multiple computational layers. As information moves from one layer to another, the network can learn increasingly complex patterns. For example, in an image recognition model, early layers may learn simple features such as lines and edges, while deeper layers may recognize more complex structures such as eyes, faces, or complete objects.
What Is an Artificial Neural Network?
An Artificial Neural Network is a computational model used to learn complex relationships within data. Each artificial neuron in the network receives input data, performs a mathematical operation on that data, and passes the result to the next layer. The connections between neurons contain parameters called weights. These weights help determine how important different pieces of information are within the network. As the model is trained, the weights are adjusted so that the model can gradually move closer to producing the correct result. Modern Deep Learning models may contain millions or even billions of parameters. The scale of the model depends on the problem being solved and the architecture being used.
How Does a Deep Learning Model Learn?
The learning process of a Deep Learning model usually begins with Training Data. For example, to create a model that recognizes cars in images, a large number of example images may be provided. At first, the model makes predictions using random or initial parameter values. The model's prediction is then compared with the correct answer. The difference between the prediction and the correct result is measured using a Loss Function. Loss indicates how much error the model has made. The model then updates its weights and other parameters to reduce this error. As this process is repeated across many examples, the model gradually learns the patterns within the data more effectively.
What Is Backpropagation?
Backpropagation is one of the main mechanisms widely used during the training of Deep Learning models. First, the model generates an output using the input data. This process is called the forward pass. The difference between the model's prediction and the correct answer is then calculated. Backpropagation allows this error to be propagated backward through the network and helps calculate how much each weight should be adjusted. An Optimizer then uses this information to update the model parameters. This process is repeated many times with the aim of reducing the loss and improving model performance.
What Are Epoch and Batch?
When learning Deep Learning, you will often encounter the terms Epoch and Batch. An Epoch means that the model has processed the entire Training Data once. For example, if a Dataset contains 10,000 images and the model processes all of them once, one epoch has been completed. A Batch is a smaller group of data samples presented to the model at one time. Instead of feeding all 10,000 images to the model at once, the data may be processed in batches of 32 or 64 images. Batch size can affect training speed, memory usage, and the learning behavior of the model.
What Is an Activation Function?
An Activation Function is a mathematical function that determines what output a neuron passes to the next layer based on the information it receives.
Different Activation Functions are used in Deep Learning models, including:
- ReLU;
- Sigmoid;
- Tanh;
- Softmax.
For example, ReLU is widely used in the hidden layers of many neural networks. Softmax may be used in the output layer of Classification models that choose between several categories. Activation Functions allow neural networks to learn complex and non-linear relationships.
What Is the Difference Between Deep Learning and Machine Learning?
Deep Learning is not a completely separate field from Machine Learning. It is a more specialized approach within Machine Learning.
The relationship can be represented as:
Artificial Intelligence → Machine Learning → Deep Learning
Traditional Machine Learning models can be highly effective when working with structured data.nDeep Learning can perform particularly well with large and complex datasets, especially unstructured data such as images, video, audio, and text. Another major difference is the Feature Extraction process. In traditional Machine Learning, specialists may play a larger role in selecting and preparing the features that are provided to the model. Deep Learning models can automatically learn many of these features through multi-layer neural networks. However, this does not mean that Deep Learning is always better than traditional Machine Learning. For small datasets, structured business data, and projects where interpretability is important, traditional Machine Learning algorithms may be more suitable.
Why Does Deep Learning Require a Lot of Data?
Deep Learning models can contain a very large number of parameters. Training these parameters effectively usually requires large amounts of data. For example, a Computer Vision model designed to recognize thousands of different images needs to see enough examples with different lighting conditions, angles, sizes, and backgrounds.If the Training Data lacks diversity, the model may perform poorly on new real-world examples. For this reason, both the size and quality of the Dataset are important in Deep Learning projects. Data should also be checked, cleaned, and properly prepared before model training because the quality of the data directly affects the final results.
What Is a CNN?
CNN stands for Convolutional Neural Network. It is one of the Deep Learning architectures commonly used for images and other visual data.
A CNN can learn to identify local visual features such as:
- edges;
- shapes;
- textures;
- parts of objects.
These features can then be combined to recognize complete objects.
CNNs are used in:
- image classification;
- object detection;
- facial recognition;
- medical image analysis;
- other Computer Vision tasks.
VGG, ResNet, and EfficientNet are examples of well-known CNN-based architectures.
What Is an RNN?
RNN stands for Recurrent Neural Network. It is a type of neural network designed to work with sequential data.
Examples include:
- text;
- audio;
- time series;
- sequential sensor data.
In this type of data, earlier information can affect later results. RNNs were designed to take these sequences into account. LSTM and GRU are RNN-based architectures developed to reduce problems related to retaining information across long sequences. Although Transformer architectures have replaced RNN-based approaches in many modern NLP tasks, RNNs and LSTMs remain important concepts for understanding the development of Deep Learning.
What Is a Transformer?
A Transformer is a Deep Learning architecture designed to work with text and other sequential data. One of the main features of the Transformer architecture is its use of the attention mechanism. Attention helps the model determine which parts of the input are most important for producing a specific result. For example, when understanding the meaning of a particular word in a long sentence, the model can evaluate its relationship with other parts of the sentence. Transformer architecture has played a major role in the development of modern Natural Language Processing systems. BERT, GPT, and many Large Language Models are based on Transformer architecture.
What Is the Relationship Between Deep Learning and LLMs?
An LLM — Large Language Model is a large-scale language model based on Deep Learning technologies. These models are trained on very large text datasets and learn language patterns, relationships between words, and context within text. Most modern LLMs use Transformer architecture.
The relationship can therefore be represented as:
Machine Learning → Deep Learning → Transformer → LLM
Technologies like these are behind many Generative AI products, including:
- chatbots;
- text generation systems;
- question-answering systems;
- document analysis tools;
- coding assistants.
What Is the Relationship Between Deep Learning and Generative AI?
Generative AI includes artificial intelligence systems that can create new content such as:
- text;
- images;
- audio;
- video;
- other forms of media.
Many of these systems use Deep Learning models. For example, Large Language Models may use Transformer architecture for text generation. Image generation systems may use Deep Learning approaches such as diffusion models. Therefore, Generative AI is a broader category of applications, while Deep Learning is one of the technological foundations behind many of these systems.

What Are the Advantages of Deep Learning?
One of the main advantages of Deep Learning is its ability to automatically learn useful features from complex data. It can identify highly complex relationships, especially in large datasets containing images, text, or audio. When large datasets and suitable computing resources are available, it is possible to develop high-performance models. The same Deep Learning principles can also be applied across different areas, and pre-trained models can be adapted to new problems.
What Are the Limitations of Deep Learning?
Deep Learning is not automatically the best choice for every problem. Training Deep Learning models can require large amounts of data and significant computing power. Training large models may also be expensive in terms of both time and financial resources. Another challenge is interpretability. It can be more difficult to explain why a highly complex neural network produced a particular result compared with traditional models. If the data is low-quality or biased, the model's results may also be affected. For this reason, a good Deep Learning system is not only about model architecture. Data quality, proper evaluation, monitoring, and responsible AI principles are also important.
Which Technologies Are Used for Deep Learning?
Python is one of the most widely used programming languages in Deep Learning. The Python ecosystem includes various libraries and frameworks for developing Deep Learning models.
PyTorch — a widely used framework for building and training neural networks.
TensorFlow — one of the platforms used to develop Deep Learning models and deploy them in production environments.
Keras — provides a simpler interface for building neural networks. In addition, Python tools such as NumPy, Pandas, and Matplotlib can be used for data preparation and analysis.
Where Should You Start Learning Deep Learning?
Starting directly with complex neural networks is not the best approach. It is useful to first learn the fundamentals of Python programming.
Then you can follow this learning path:
Python → Mathematics and Statistics → Working with Data → Machine Learning → Neural Networks → Deep Learning → CNN / RNN / Transformer → NLP / Computer Vision / LLM
When learning Deep Learning, it is important not to rely only on theoretical knowledge. At the beginning, projects such as image classification, text classification, and simple prediction models can help you understand the concepts more effectively. Later, you can move on to more advanced projects involving Computer Vision, NLP, RAG, and LLM-based systems.
